What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
You know, one of my high school buddies, a so called good god fearing churchy type said something to me once that has stuck with me. He said:
“You know dude, your morals are gonna get you in trouble one day”
It was at that point, almost 30 years ago, i began to realise that most people i seemed to know where not decent or nice. As my eyes opened to who was around me, i began to spend more time alone and i began to watch the news. Then the realisation that the world was full of these moralless husks slowly hit me.
Over time i built new relationships with nice people. Yet his advice stuck with me! Except i did not slack on my morals. Sure they have made life challenging from time to time, but nobody ever said doing the right thing was easy.
I have, and continue to, live my life in a manner that i can hold my head up and say;
‘i have tried to do the right thing, i have tried to be a good person‘.
And i believe thats what we should all do.
Now, i may not go to church, but i believe what i believe and i don’t believe i need to ‘fear’ or ‘worship’ anything or anyone. What i do is try to be decent. I also try to bring a bit of joy to the world in my silly books and comics. Cuz hey, we all need a little escape!!
Just fyi, i based the character ‘Rusty’, one of the fat boys in the Dookie books, on the guy that gave me the advice.
My advice: Live free & search out the light within you, smile each day.
